Lord Shiv performing Tandav dance - Door Pediment - Banteay Srei Temple. Originally named as the temple of “Shrī Tribhuvan Maheshwar”, Banteay Srei is dedicated to Lord Shiv. It was founded by Yajñavarāh, the spiritual teacher of King Jayavarman V in A.D. 967 in the ancient locality called Īshvarpur near Phnom Dei. Beautifully carved in pink stone, Banteay Srei was discovered in 1914 and restored from 1931 to 1936 through the process of anastylosis. Lord Shiv to whom the temple is dedicated represents Universal Consciouness and Goddess Pārvati, the Cosmic Energy. In ancient Cambodia, Lord Shiv was worshipped in the form of an image and as a sacred Shivalinga. The sacred Shivalinga is a symbol of the formless and absolute aspect of Lord Shiv. (Image # 00118).
